The Golden Compass--TERRIBLE ENDING!!!!!

I don't remember the last time I read a book with a worse ending--I know it's been years. This book is horror, not fantasy, and I didn't realize it until the last few pages. I will NEVER read another word by this author. The good news is that we now won't waste our hard-earned money on the movie. How depressing to expect a nice, family-friendly fantasy with a feel-good ending, but end up with a thinly disguised tirade against child abuse in the Catholic church, where the bad guys get away with it. Sure it's a trilogy, and there's always a chance things might come out right in the end, but each book should still have a satisfying ending. If this author wants his readers to feel like victims, he has definitely succeeded with this one.

Have you seen the email floating around the internet to boycott the movie? Even Snopes is quoted.

But the email description of a "series of children's books about killing God" doesn't sound anything like what you read.

I like your idea of boycotting the movie because the book is just plain bad story writing.

YIKES! I never thought about it being considered a children's book. Tomorrow I'll call my library and make sure it isn't displayed in the kids' section. It should definitely carry a warning. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 63. (That would have saved me $5 and a wasted weekend.)

Actually, except for the ending, it was not bad story writing. This author is really a very good writer. When you're in the child's head, it's really a child's head, not a ventriloquist's dummy for the adult author (one of my pet peeves). It's also very imaginative, well-paced, etc. My only complaints are that it's disguised as something for children and the ending left me feeling victimized.

It's interesting that someone called this a "series of children's books about killing God". What they're killing is children's souls (called demons in the book), which also kills their spirit and sometimes their bodies, too. When the experiments go really wrong, the children go insane before they die. I guess that would be killing God if they succeeded in destroying all of the children. By then, they'd have a a whole generation of zombies, which would destroy the human race, and that may as well be the end of God.

Merry Christmas everybody. Let's all join hands and skip over to our neighborhood theater for a warm and fuzzy Christmas fantasy. NOT! NOT! NOT!

Golden Compass -- a Trilogy?

Yikes, I just read that "The Amber Spyglass" is the ending of a trilogy that included "Golden Compass" and "The Subtle Knife" or was it "His Dark Materials", I'm not sure. But it really sounds like this is why the one you read (Golden Compass) had such an unsatisfying ending. You think?

Golden Compass -- a Trilogy?

This makes me furious on several levels. Not only is torturing children not a subject I want to read about, so I wouldn't read the rest of this series under any circumstances, but when I buy a book, I expect it to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Just because it's a trilogy, doesn't relieve the author of that responsibility. If you buy a pair of shoes, you expect both of them to be in the box. If you find one missing, and return it to the store, you wouldn't expect them to say "Come back next year and get the other shoe." This soap opera nonsense has burned me up for years. It insults my intelligence as a reader and makes me believe the author is too insecure or lacking in talent to write a stand-alone book as part of a threesome or series. The joke is on them where Bob and I are concerned. When we find an author who pulls that crap--if it's one we like--we wait until the whole series is out, then buy it used or get it from the library. We only support with real $$ the authors who give us full value for our money.

Well, it's been a couple years since we had this discussion. I received a few emails on the subject, but did not receive permission to post them here.

At any rate --- the movie seems to have survived in spite of all the negative emails. I didn't see it, so I can't comment on the story line.

Would anyone else like to comment now?
